ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am primarily an acrylic based painter and 2-D artist. I most often work with the figure, mixing abstract and representational elements. I also enjoy working with different 3-D media, and am interested in exploring how these materials can help my paintings reach outside the confines of the panel. My art is heavily centered around my identity as a queer trans woman. Art provides a therapeutic outlet for me, where I can process things that I may not be able to reconcile with in thoughts or words alone. Art is an amazing tool for communication, and I appreciate being able to have, in some ways, conversations with myself through painting. There is a strong back and forth that occurs between me and whatever surface I’m painting on. I adore the revealing nature that art intrinsically has, and pairing that with focused self-exploration can be incredibly rewarding. The process of coming out as transgender, both to myself and others, as well as continuously exploring my own ideas of my identity can be overwhelming and confusing. However, it is also exceptionally liberating, and I become more in tune with myself every day. I strive to dive deep and learn about myself when I make art, and I like to feel that I have represented something about myself that I couldn’t have said with only words when I finish a piece. Artmaking is a means for me to question, discover, and document truths about myself as a human. I hope that my truth can shine through my art and that other marginalized people, especially queer people, who view my art can be warmed by that light. Through my art practice, I work to create space for myself to unapologetically and unashamedly be me. By doing this I hope to increase space, visibility, and respect for queer identities. My art is a celebration of the beauty of being trans.
